However as I said I played this a long time ago, and they may have "hardened" that soft paywall some in the intervening years. In essence I found the soft paywall to be not much of a paywall at all, rather a difficult challenge that allows skilled players to really feel challenged in a way the first game didn't deliver on. It's hard, yes, but getting past that difficult level only makes your victory taste all the sweeter - like beating a boss in Dark Souls. It's still the same game, that much didn't change (EA's evil, not stupid) but get this - with enough planning and determination, you absolutely can get past every level the game throws at you. If memory serves, certain plants are locked behind microtransactions, and they also have an energy system that you can pay to get around, also essentially they have a pay-to-win system that lets you breeze past levels. I understand the hate for EA, believe me, I do - I played PvZ 2 for a while after it launched. I fear to see what it will look like, though I expect to see even more opportunities to milk the whales (since that seems to be where all multiplayer games are headed, if not already there.) it certainly harms it.Īnd this stuff was added over time since the game came out - when it first came out there were still plants to unlock for $ and the like, but they added more and more opportunities to spend real money in the game, and especially the multiplayer-lite stuff where you can spend money to gain an edge while competing against opponents that are presumably real people (but does it really matter?) I don't think it ruins the game entirely, but. It's a good game, and you can play it and have a lot of fun with it without spending a penny on it, but the DLC and "pay to win" stuff is always lurking there in the shadows. That said, I can't disagree with any of the rest. Though I imagine that the "multiplayer-lite" Battlez stuff will certainly require that you be online. PvZ2 does not have mandatory online - it runs fine offline (and I just checked to make sure.
